New SMSA Management Agreement with Highway Safety Services

The Executive Committee over the last several months has been working on “reinventing the SMSA.” Reinventing the SMSA was a unanimous decision made by the membership at the 2011 Annual Members’ Business Meeting. After studying several approaches, the Executive Committee decided to enter into an agreement with an independent organization that would assist and support the Executive Committee in managing the SMSA. We are very pleased to announce that as of January 1, 2012, Highway Safety Services, LLC (HSS) will be working with the SMSA to complete projects, develop working relationships with federal and national organizations and assist in the management of the Association. New SMSA Website!

The new SMSA website at is up and running. The new website is easier to navigate and will house valuable resources for state Motorcycle Safety Administrators and Offices of Highway Safety (e.g., PSAs) to download and use within your state’s motorcycle safety program. Some sections are still under construction as we continue to make significant improvements to the site, so please be sure to check back as continues to grow and become a valuable resource to the SMSA community.

SMSA Strategic Plan Development

In the coming months the SMSA Executive Committee will finalize the new SMSA Strategic Plan to outline the goals and direction of the Association for the coming years. More details on the SMSA Strategic Plan will be available soon.

Revisions to the SMSA By-Laws

A committee, comprised of seven members and a moderator, met via web-conference four times over eight weeks to rewrite the Association’s by-laws. The most current revision is available on the SMSA website. Members will have approximately two weeks to review and comment on the draft. A final draft will be posted to the website prior to a vote via an online survey. If approved, the new by-laws will go into effect July 1, 2012.

The Executive Committee would like to extend a huge thanks to the following individuals who are working on this project:

  • Rick Kiley, Voting Member, South Dakota
  • Despina Metakos, Voting Member, Rhode Island
  • John Petrush, Voting Member, South Carolina

2012 Elections

In 2012, we will be electing one Western, two Central, and one Eastern Region representatives to the Executive Committee and electing the Chairperson.  We will be sending the election ballots out on June 1, 2012 so the winners can be announced at the Annual Members Business Meeting.  Serving on the Executive Committee requires some time commitment.  If you are interested in serving on the Executive Committee, please ensure you are able to commit the time.

Prior to the election, we will ask all the candidates to submit a brief bio and statement of what they can bring to the Executive Committee.  These will be posted on the SMSA website so regional members can review before they vote.
