Motorcycle Safety Program Assessment Services

New for Motorcycle Safety Programs!

Program assessments are nothing new for most of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's priority areas.But what is new is the addition of assessment guidelines for a state's motorcycle safety efforts.This assessment process has been developed by experts in the motorcycle safety field, in cooperation with seasoned assessment team members and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Similar to assessments in other priority areas, a team is invited to interview key contributors to the state's motorcycle safety efforts. The team then produces a recommendation report, based upon established standards, for the state's use.

Never before has the motorcycle safety field had such a valuable tool to use in evaluating the effectiveness of a state's programming efforts.

Program Assessments are a Valuable Tool

Program assessments are valuable tools to highway safety professionals because they bring in experts from across the nation to review your program components and compare them to state-of-the art program guidelines.

In other priority areas, states have used program assessments to:

  • bring attention to the strengths of their highway safety program;
  • focus on those areas which need attention and assistance
  • identify areas where new programming needs to be developed;
  • meet program evaluation requirements required in many states;
  • supply justification for additional program funding; and
  • provide support and direction for legislative initiatives.

Arranging for an Assessment of Your Motorcycle Safety Program

State Responsibilities

The program assessment should be a cooperative effort between the State Highway Safety Office and the state motorcycle safety program administrator.

The state is responsible for funding the program assessment, providing the assessment team with briefing information prior to their visit, travel arrangements for the team, meeting arrangements for the assessment interviews, and identifying and scheduling interviewees.

NHTSA/SMSA Partnership

Upon receiving a request for an assessment, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) will meet with the state to determine their needs, identify assessment team members, and provide on-site assistance and evaluation of the assessment process.

The National Association of State Motorcycle Safety Administrators will serve as a resource to the state regarding questions and concerns relating to the program assessment.
