Maximizing The Capacity You Already Have

The survey results indicate that we are all facing the challenge of unmet demand for training services. Before adding courses, sites, instructors, trainers and the like, it's worth looking at how our programs are utilizing the resources we have today.

  • Range Capacity: Are you using your available range space to its best advantage? If you are running classes with a range group maximum of 9, 10,or 11 riders, what will it take to expand to a 12-student range? Are there other locations nearby that would accommodate a 12-student range?
  • Full Courses: Are the courses filling to capacity? What procedures are in place to ensure full and efficient courses? Here is one example:
    • 2 weeks prior to start date:
6-8 registrations OK with 1 instructor Limit to 8
11-12 OK with 2 instructors Limit to 12
18-20 OK with 3 instructors Limit to 20
22-24 OK with 4 instructors Limit to 24
      Less than 6 Cancel course
    • For less than 6, 9-10, 17, and 12 registrations, attempt to fill the course from students registered for future courses (call and ask them to take the earlier course.) This is like running an airline - all seats should be filled!
  • Use creative scheduling. The following are options to consider
    • AM and PM range groups. If facilities are a limiting factor, make sure you are getting the most use you can. Schedule courses so the range is used for at least two different groups in a day. For example, on a given Saturday, one group of 12 students rides from 7:30am - 11:30am and then another group rides from 11:30am - 3:30pm.
    • Mid-week schedules. If facilities and instructors are available, consider offering courses during the week (e.g. Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday).
    • All evening schedules. Use several consecutive evenings to run a course (e.g. Monday-Friday 5:30pm - 9:00pm).
    • All morning schedules. Use several consecutive mornings to run a course (e.g. Monday-Friday 7:00am-10:30am).
    • Teach alone courses. If you have courses that aren't filling up to 12 or 24, rather than cancel them, arrange for instructors who are qualified to teach alone and run courses of 6-8.
