Module III –

Coaching On The Range

RiderCoach PDW

1

Opening Remarks

Module Objectives

This module is designed to allow RiderCoaches to identify

behaviors that may possibly inhibit learning, and develop

practical methods for improving coaching skills and

creating a more positive learning environment.

1. Identify ineffective coaching techniques presented in photo and audio scenarios.

2. Develop effective verbal and non-verbal, learner-centered techniques to reduce rider risk

and enhance rider learning.

Activity: On the range scenarios.

1. Several on-range scenarios will be presented, one at a time. Pay close attention to each

photo and listen carefully to the accompanying audio.

2. As a group at each table, take about 5 minutes to discuss what you saw and heard. Using

your experiences, come to a group consensus on what could be done differently to

improve the performance of the RiderCoach in each situation.

3. Each table should choose a reporter to present your group’s recommendations.

Use the following questions as a guide as you develop the group responses at your table:

What did you see?

What did you hear?

What would you do differently?

Scenario #8: Cornering Judgment

“Good job using both brakes. Next time, don’t cover the front brake. And,

remember to keep your head and eyes up. You did a great job of looking through

the turn, but try to remember to keep your knees in and roll on the throttle. Don’t

forget to properly time your downshift. Now, go try it again.”
