License to Ride Fact Sheet

All 50 states require motorcycle riders to obtain a special license or endorsement to operate a motorcycle on public streets and highways, yet approximately 20% of the national motorcycle population is not properly licensed. There are currently 5.5 million motorcycle owners in the U.S. with 3.9 million registered motorcycles, accounting for 1.9% of all motor vehicles registered for use on public roads in the U.S. Source: U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration

About 35% of motorcycle riders nationally who are involved in fatal crashes are not properly licensed, with some states reporting as many as 80% of their motorcycle fatalities as improperly licensed riders. Improved law enforcement training on motorcycle licensing as well as increased enforcement of motorcycle licensing laws have greatly increased the chances of being apprehended operating a motorcycle without a proper license or endorsement. Findings indicate that the overall number of motorcycle crashes and fatalities would be reduced if more motorcycle riders who are currently operating without a proper license would successfully complete a comprehensive training course and become properly licensed.
